Expanded high-speed internet services are in the works for several rural pockets in St. Mary’s County. The St. Mary’s County commissioners on Tuesday approved submitting a request to the Governor’s Office of Rural Broadband for the expansion plans. In partnership with Atlantic Broadband, which provides cable, internet and telephone service in several states including Maryland, Bob Kelly, director of information technology for the county, said 15 areas in St. Mary’s have been identified for the “middle mile” expansion, extending the infrastructure that currently exists in the more populated “major thoroughfares” of the county, Kelly said.

Salamanca schools presented $5,000 from cable commission

As part of negotiations for a new contract between Atlantic Broadband and four area municipalities, the cable company has donated $5,000 to Salamanca schools for its television studio. At Tuesday’s Board of Education meeting, Tim Jackson and Paul Mager, two members of the local cable commission, presented a ceremonial check on behalf of the cable company to the school district. “Tonight we have a wonderful benefit or receiving a financial contribution on behalf of that agreement for our school district to be earmarked for our media curriculum,” said Robert Breidenstein, district superintendent.
