10-Digit Dialing: 988 Area Code Updates
Dear Atlantic Broadband Customer:
The FCC has designated 988 as an abbreviated dialing code for the National Suicide Prevention and Mental Health Crisis Hotline. In area codes where 988 is a working prefix, local calls will need to be dialed using a 10-digit phone number (1 + area code + phone number), even when dialing in the same area code.
10-digit dialing began on a transition basis on April 24, 2021 and will become mandatory on October 24, 2021. Starting on that date, customers must dial 10-digits (area code + telephone number) for all local calls. On and after October 24, local calls dialed with only 7 digits may not be completed, and a recording will inform you that your call cannot be completed as dialed. You'll be required to hang up and dial again using the area code and the 7-digit number.
Beginning July 16, 2022, dialing “988” will route calls to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. For more information, click here.
